The amount requested of each outside agency is expected to be at least $15,000. Proposals that have already been developed or are near completion are NOT eligible for this competition. Proposals requiring additional research and that are being rewritten for a second submission may be eligible. Reviewer comments must be included in the SBSRI application packet. Recipients of a Summer Research Grant Development Award are required to participate in grant workshops (May 7 and 8), and to participate in the review sessions for draft proposals (TBA, usually in early June and late August). Attendance is required, so check on scheduled workshops and review sessions BEFORE submitting a proposal. HOW: Proposal applications, and a letter of support from the Department Head, are submitted to the SBSRI, Social Sciences 115C. WHEN: By 12 NOON on April 2, 2008. WHO: Social & Behavioral Sciences Faculty and Academic Professionals who have at least a 0.50 FTE in the college, are tenured, tenure-track, continuing, or continuing eligible. Otherwise qualified Social and Behavioral Sciences Faculty and Academic Professionals whose primary responsibility is to engage in grant writing, or who are in a single duty position (job responsibilities that focus primarily on one particular type of task, or that are not evaluated for tenure/continuing status on the basis of combined efforts in teaching, research, and service) are not eligible to apply. This is a one-time award; previous summer awardees are ineligible. Applications and Guidelines are available in the SBSRI Office, Social Sciences 115C and on the SBSRI web site HYPERLINK "http://sbsri.web.arizona.edu" http://sbsri.web.arizona.edu. Direct questions to Camilla Strausfeld at 621-3930, or e-mail: HYPERLINK "mailto:cstrausf@u.arizona.edu" cstrausf@u.arizona.edu before submitting a proposal. SBSRI PROPOSAL APPLICATION GUIDELINES Faculty Summer Research Grant Development Awards Identify Agencies: Eligible SBS faculty and professionals will identify at least three outside funding opportunities with proposal submission deadlines and amounts to be requested (at least $15,000 per agency). For assistance in identifying outside funding sources contact Camilla Strausfeld, HYPERLINK "mailto:cstrausf@u.arizona.edu" cstrausf@u.arizona.edu. In selecting funding programs, remember the requirement to submit a draft proposal for one of the review sessions before the proposal is submitted to an outside agency. The SBSRI Office must receive an electronic copy of the draft at least 1 week before the scheduled review session. Application: The proposal packet comprises a cover sheet signed by the applicant; abstract; 3-page proposal narrative; list of literature cited; ideas on how the proposed research can be incorporated into the graduate and undergraduate learning experience; budget and budget justification if the application includes a research component; applicants curriculum vitae (3-page limit, see CV Guidelines); and information on three outside funding programs. The proposal narrative should include the problem or issue that is the focus of the research, the significance of the project within the field in terms comprehensible to scholars from other fields, the methods for addressing that issue (at least 1 page), and a time-line for project completion. (Proposals in a font smaller than 12 point or with margins of less than 1 inch will not be reviewed.) The Department Head Memo may be attached to the back of the packet or sent directly to the SBSRI Office to arrive by the deadline. Submit the original and 5 copies of the proposal packet to Camilla Strausfeld, Social Sciences 115C by 12 NOON, April 2, 2008. Detailed budget and 1-page budget justification for research expenses: The stipend portion of the award is capped at $3,000; however, awardees can reduce the stipend and expense the remainder (up to a total of $5,000) for research costs, such as research-related travel, wages for student workers, supplies, special computing needs (e.g., software, clearly tied to the project), and other miscellaneous research expenses. No support is provided for per diem, travel to conferences, or standard equipment (including computers, computer components, and standard software). Awards are based on the resources available, scholarly merit and significance of the research, and likelihood of outside funding. Some proposal evaluation criteria are: clarity of ideas and formulation of problem, appropriateness of methodology, contribution to discipline, likelihood that the proposal would be completed as effectively without SBSRI support, and the level of previous SBSRI support. See also General SBSRI Grant Program Guidelines. Faculty awards will be paid as supplemental compensation and research cost reimbursement during the summer of 2008. Student awards will be paid as a scholarship. Successful proposals having more than one principal investigator will receive only one award. All funds MUST be expensed through the SBSRI Office by September 30, 2008. Selection Process: Proposals will be ranked and award determined by the SBSRI Advisory Board, which consists of tenured or tenure-track faculty in SBS. Awardees are required to participate in two half-day grant-writing workshops held in May. Drafts of proposals will be evaluated in "mock" review panels, which will provide valuable feedback to applicants. Draft proposals and copies are due in the SBSRI Office at least 1 week before the assigned review date. Review dates are typically scheduled in June and in August after the start of the new semester. Awardee participation on both review panels is also required. Proposals must be submitted to the outside agency by April 2009. Copies of the resulting proposals to the outside agencies, and copies of the signed proposal routing sheets will be submitted to the SBSRI as soon as all signatures have been obtained on the routing sheets, but no later than the end of Spring semester following the award. Principal investigator(s) will notify SBSRI of proposal status, i.e., awarded, denied, revise. Barring unforeseen contingencies, failure to submit a proposal to the outside agency will result in repayment of award amount. Direct questions to Camilla Strausfeld, Social Sciences 115C, 621-3930 (cstrausf@u.arizona.edu). Social and Behavioral Sciences Research Institute General SBSRI Grant Program Guidelines SBSRI programs are short-term, seed money grants designed to meet immediate funding needs for projects to be completed in the current academic year only. If requested at the time of application, funding extensions may be granted to support research that may need to extend into the summer. However, no funding will carry forward into the new academic year. Applicants are expected to plan projects accordingly. Some criteria used in evaluating SBSRI grant proposals: It is stressed that SBSRI awards are for research-based expenses. The primary concern is the quality of the research itself: the significance, sophistication, and consequences of the proposed research. Following are some of the questions asked in determining the quality issue: 1. Are the leading ideas and their significance clearly articulated, and in a manner that is understandable and appreciated by a non-specialist audience? 2. Are the research methods well presented and justified? 3. Is the Principal Investigator aware of existing literature in the field? 4. Is the research doable in the available time? 5. Is the end product defined, and is it reasonable for the project? PLEASE NOTE: It is the policy of the SBSRI Advisory Board to make available the narrative portion of successful proposals to other faculty or members of the public who request it. Certain information, e.g., salary, is considered confidential and will not be released. Abstracts from successful proposals may also be posted on the SBSRI web page ( HYPERLINK "http://sbsri.web.arizona.edu" http://sbsri.web.arizona.edu). Application to the SBSRI grants program implies consent to this policy. The Committee recognizes, however, that certain exceptions to this policy may need to be made; therefore, written requests justifying the need to maintain confidentiality of the narrative or abstract, in whole or in part, will be considered. If you wish to review some past successful applications before submitting one of your own, contact Camilla Strausfeld at 621-3930, cstrausf@u.arizona.edu.
