The amount requested from each outside agency must be at least $3,500. Proposals submitted before participation in the grant-writing workshops and draft review sessions do not satisfy the requirement to submit a proposal to an outside funding agency. The summer stipend is normally paid as a scholarship in August of the year it is awarded, but can also be used for pilot research expenses. ELIGIBILITY: Eligible applicants are graduate students who are majoring in one of the disciplines in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, who have made satisfactory progress towards the Ph.D. for 2 or more years, and who will be registered students at the University of Arizona during AY 2008-09. Eligibility of S.L.A.T. Students will be determined on an individual basis and BEFORE a proposal is submitted to the SBSRI grant program. Contact the SBSRI Office for specifics. This is a one-time award; previous summer awardees are ineligible. Recipients of a Summer Research Grant Development Stipend must participate in grant-writing workshops (May 7 and 8), and review sessions of draft proposals (TBA, usually early June and late August). Attendance is required, so check on scheduled workshops and review sessions BEFORE submitting a proposal. Awardees are required to submit a draft proposal for one review session before the proposal is submitted to the outside funding agency. APPLICATIONS: Submit one original and five copies to the SBSRI, Social Sciences 115C. Proposals should be in a font no smaller than 12 point, with 1-inch margins all around and include a cover sheet signed by the applicant; abstract; 3-page proposal narrative; list of literature cited; budget of proposed research and budget justification; ideas on how the intended research can be incorporated into the graduate and undergraduate learning experience; applicants abbreviated curriculum vitae (3 page limit); and information on the outside funding programs. The letters of support from the applicants graduate advisor and department head can be included in the application packet or submitted separately by the application deadline. See Application Check List. REPORTING: Awardees are required to provide the SBSRI with a copy of the resulting proposals to the outside agencies and a copy of the signed proposal routing sheets as soon as all signatures have been obtained on the routing sheet, but no later than the end of Spring semester 2009. Principal investigator(s) will notify SBSRI of their proposal status, i.e., awarded, declined, pending, revise. Barring unforeseen circumstances, failure to submit a proposal to the outside agency will result in repayment of stipend amount. DEADLINE: 12 noon, April 2, 2008 Please direct questions to Camilla Strausfeld, 621-3930 or e-mail cstrausf@u.arizona.edu Please read Summer Research Grant Development Program Guidelines Summer Graduate Research Grant Development Program Guidelines Identify Agencies: Eligible SBS graduate students will identify at least three outside funding opportunities with proposal submission deadlines and amounts to be requested (at least $3,500 per agency). For assistance in identifying outside funding sources contact Camilla Strausfeld, HYPERLINK "mailto:cstrausf@u.arizona.edu" cstrausf@u.arizona.edu. In selecting funding programs, remember the requirement to submit a draft proposal for one of the review sessions before the proposal is submitted to an outside agency. The SBSRI Office must receive an electronic copy of the draft at least 1 week before the scheduled review session. Application: The proposal packet comprises a cover sheet signed by the applicant; abstract; 3-page proposal narrative; list of literature cited; budget of proposed research and budget justification: ideas on how the proposed research can be incorporated into the graduate and undergraduate learning experience; applicants curriculum vitae (3-page limit, see CV Guidelines); and information on three outside funding programs. The proposal narrative should include the problem or issue that is the focus of the research, the significance of the project within the field in terms comprehensible to scholars from other fields, the methods for addressing that issue (at least 1 page), and a time-line for project completion. (Proposals in a font smaller than 12 point or with margins of less than 1 inch will not be reviewed.) Letters from the graduate advisor and department head may be attached to the back of the packet or sent directly to the SBSRI Office to arrive by the deadline. Submit the original and 5 copies of the proposal packet to Camilla Strausfeld, Social Sciences 115C by 12 NOON, April 2, 2008. Eligibility. Eligible applicants are graduate students in one of the disciplines in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, who have made satisfactory progress towards the Ph.D. for 2 or more years, and who will be registered students at the UA during AY 2008-09. S.L.A.T. student eligibility will be determined on an individual basis BEFORE a proposal is submitted to the SBSRI grant program. Contact the SBSRI Office for specifics. Selection Process. Proposals are reviewed by the SBSRI Advisory Board, which consists of tenured or tenure-track faculty. Awards depend on the resources available, scholarly merit and significance of the research, the likelihood that the research would be completed as effectively without SBSRI support, and the likelihood of the project securing outside funding. Evaluation criteria include clarity of ideas and problem formulation, appropriateness of methodology, context of project within existing literature, significance of contribution to new research, and the level of other support. Applicants can expect to receive notice of the Board's decision within 1 month of the deadline. Letters of Support: The advisors letter of support should verify that the student has made satisfactory progress towards Ph.D. candidacy over the last 2 years, and will be a registered UA graduate student in the coming academic year. The letter should also specifically address how the student is likely to respond to constructive evaluations. The department head memo should discuss the support currently being provided to the applicant by the department and how the applicant would benefit from SBSRI Summer Grant Development support. Applicants should give adequate advance notice to their advisor and department head, who will likely want to see the proposal to SBSRI before writing the letters. Payment. Awards will be paid as a scholarship during August 2008 or as reimbursed pilot research expenses. All funds MUST be expensed through the SBSRI Office by September 30, 2008. Workshops and Review Sessions: Awardees are required to participate in short grant-writing workshops held in May. In June and August drafts of proposals will be evaluated in "mock" review panels, which will provide feedback to applicants. Draft proposals in electronic form are due in the SBSRI Office at least 1 week before the assigned review date. Review dates will be scheduled in June and in August according to the proposal deadlines for the external agencies. Awardee participation on both review panels is also required. Reporting. Proposals must be submitted to the outside agency by Spring 2009. Copies of the proposals and the signed proposal routing sheets will be submitted to the SBSRI as soon as all signatures have been obtained on the routing sheets, but no later than the end of Spring semester 2009. Principal investigator(s) will notify SBSRI of proposal status, i.e., awarded, denied, revise. Barring unforeseen contingencies, failure to submit a proposal to the outside agency will result in repayment of award amount.
