The purpose of this funding is to support SBS Graduate Student research activities resulting in a Masters thesis, publishable manuscript, or a pilot project that will justify dissertation funding from an outside agency. Proposals are written by the graduate student and evaluated by the SBSRI Advisory Board. Up to ten (10) awards will be supported, in two rounds, during the current academic year. An individual can receive only one grant from the SBSRI per academic year. FUNDING SUPPORT: Funding is short term and is intended to meet the most immediate needs of the applicant. Priority will be given to projects scheduled for completion within four (4) months of award notification. No funding will extend beyond July 31 of the academic year in which it is awarded. Allowable expenses include research-related travel and expenses. This program does not support travel to meetings to present papers, publication costs, or salary supplement to the investigator. Ownership of research equipment purchased on this grant reverts to the SBSRI at the end of the research project. PROPOSALS include a cover sheet; abstract; 3-page proposal narrative, including a time line for completing the project being proposed; budget justification; list of research references cited; applicants curriculum vitae (3 page limit); a recommendation letter from the applicants academic advisor, and a letter from the Department Head. The letter from the applicants academic advisor should endorse the proposed project, state when qualifying exams are expected to be scheduled (or thesis completed), and verify that the applicant is a student in good standing. See Pre-Doc Graduate Research Grant Application Guidelines for specifics. ELIGIBILITY: All officially registered graduate students majoring in a discipline in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences are eligible. Masters level students must be conducting research related to the completion of the thesis. Students can apply to only one program per deadline and receive only one pre-doc or dissertation grant during the same academic year. PAYMENT: An expense account is established in the SBSRI Office through which ALL expenditures are handled. Awardees must contact the SBSRI Business Manager, Kelly Huff, 626-1616 or huffk@email.arizona.edu, BEFORE committing or spending funds, be available to sign any necessary paperwork, and be registered students at the UA at the time of application and during the semester following the award. Operational advances can be made only to individuals on the UA payroll. Funding expires on July 31 of the academic year in which it is awarded, and no grant will carry over into the new academic year. REPORTING: Awardees are required to submit a 1- to 2-page research report to the SBSRI Office within 60 days of the end of the funding period. DEADLINES: 12 noon, October 23, 2007 and February 12, 2008 Please direct any questions to Camilla Strausfeld, 621-3930 or e-mail cstrausf@u.arizona.edu Please read Pre-Doc Graduate Research Grant Application Guidelines Pre-Doc Graduate Research Grant Application Guidelines The proposal packet must contain the signed program cover sheet, project abstract, proposal narrative (maximum 3 pages), budget justification, list of research references cited, and applicants curriculum vitae (maximum 3 pages). The proposal should be in a font no smaller than 12 point, with 1-inch margins all around. Letters from the thesis or dissertation committee chair and department head may be included in the packet or sent directly to the SBSRI Office. Proposals not in compliance with these guidelines will NOT be reviewed. One original and seven copies of the proposal packet should be submitted to Camilla Strausfeld, Social Sciences 115C, by 12 noon on the deadline date. Proposal Narrative. This should present the problem or issue that is the focus of the research and the method for addressing that issue. Applicants should emphasize the significance of their project within their field in terms comprehensible to scholars from a variety of fields. Include a time line for the research project being funded and a statement of when comprehensive exams are expected to be taken or the Masters thesis completed. In addition, please read the General SBSRI Grant Program Guidelines sheet. Letter of Recommendation. The letter from the academic advisor should address 1) the value of the project to the candidate's disciplinary field and course of study, 2) the likelihood that the applicant will achieve the stated goals of the project, 3) the anticipated time frame for comprehensive exams or thesis completion, and 4) the academic standing of the student. This letter can be included in each packet or an original and seven copies sent directly to the SBSRI Office to arrive by the proposal deadline. Department Head Memo. This should discuss the funding available through the department for graduate student support, the applicants current specific support, and justification for supplementing that support through the SBSRI grant. This letter can be included in each packet or an original and seven copies sent directly to the SBSRI office to arrive by the proposal deadline. Selection Process. Proposals will be reviewed by the SBSRI Advisory Board, which consists of tenured and tenure-track faculty. Awards depend on the resources available, scholarly merit and significance of the research, and likelihood of the project's completion. Evaluation criteria are clarity of ideas and problem formulation, appropriateness of methodology, context of project within existing literature, significance of contribution to new research, likelihood that the research will be conducted without SBSRI support, and other support available (see also General SBSRI Grant Program Guidelines). Applicants can expect to receive notice of the Board's decision within 2 to 3 weeks of the deadline. Eligibility. All officially registered graduate students majoring in a discipline in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences. Priority will be given to projects to be completed within 4 months of the award. Payments. ALL expenditures will be handled through an expense account in the SBSRI Office in accordance with established UA policies and procedures. Funding expires on July 31 of the academic year in which it is awarded and no grant will carry forward to the next academic year. All expense transactions must be COMPLETED before August 6. Expenditures are limited to those approved by the SBSRI Board at the time of the award. No support is provided for travel to meetings to present papers, for equipment maintenance, or salary supplement to the investigator. Reporting. Awardees are required to submit a 1- to 2-page research report to the SBSRI within 60 days of the end of the funding period. Questions regarding the policies and procedures outlined in these guidelines should be directed to Camilla Strausfeld, Social Sciences 115C, 621-3930 BEFORE submitting a proposal. Applicants are expected to plan projects accordingly. The SBSRI is also interested in assisting the establishment of scholarly networks and collaborative efforts in critical research fields throughout the social and behavioral sciences, including links with other colleges as appropriate. In addition, sympathetic attention will be given to requests that come from groups or individuals who are moving into new research areas. Projects involving quantitative research, qualitative research, or both are welcomed. Some criteria used in evaluating SBSRI grant proposals: SBSRI awards are for research-based expenses. The primary concern is the quality of the research itself: the significance, sophistication, and consequences of the proposed research. Following are some of the questions asked in determining the quality issue: 1. Are the leading ideas and their significance clearly articulated, and in a manner that is understandable and appreciated by a non-specialist audience? 2. Are the research methods well presented and justified? 3. Is the Principal Investigator aware of existing literature in the field? 4. Is it demonstrated that the project can be completed in the available time? 5. Is the end product defined, and is it reasonable for the project?
