Small Grants and Small Grant Extensions

WHAT: SMALL GRANTS (up to $2,000) are designed to provide seed money for the development of larger projects, especially those leading to proposals to outside funding agencies, though these grants may also be used for full-scale but inexpensive projects or parts of projects. Funds may support research-related travel (travel and lodging only -- NO per diem), wages for student workers, supplies, special computing needs (e.g. Software, if the need is clearly tied to the research project), and other miscellaneous research expenses. No support is provided for: per diem, faculty supplemental compensation, travel to conferences, or standard equipment (including computers and computer components).
HOW: Proposal applications are submitted to the SBSRI, Social Sciences 115C.
WHEN: October 30, 2007 & February 19, 2008
WHO: Eligible faculty and academic professionals have at least 0.50 FTE in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences and are tenured, tenure-track, or equivalent. Non-tenure track research faculty and lecturers are eligible if they have been employed in SBS for 2 consecutive years at 0.50 FTE or higher and if the department head submits a letter of support to SBSRI. Non-tenure track applicants should also include a paragraph about how their department and the college will benefit from the proposed research.

WHAT: SMALL GRANT EXTENSIONS (up to an additional $1,000) may be available to researchers who receive an SBSRI Small Grant and find that they require additional funds to complete the project, if the original funding has already been completely spent (not just committed), and if the extension funds will be spent before August 10. The review committee will look most favorably upon extensions for projects where an application has been made to an outside funding source. No support is provided for faculty supplemental salary, travel to conferences, or standard equipment.
HOW: Proposal applications are submitted to the SBSRI, Social Sciences 115C.
WHEN: Anytime before NOON on April 21, 2008, or earlier if funds in this category are depleted

Questions regarding allowable expenditures should be directed to Camilla Strausfeld BEFORE submitting a proposal.
