Research Professorship
| WHAT: |
Research Professorships provide a semester's release time from teaching
duties to conduct primarily campus-based research. Applicants may indicate their
preference for Fall or Spring semester (negotiation for release semester is
between applicant and department head). Faculty will continue to receive their
usual salaries, with an agreed-upon portion ($6,500) of the replacement teaching
funds being supplied by SBSRI for one semester. Department Heads, in units from
which a faculty member submits an application for a Professorship, must send
to the SBSRI a memo in support of the release time. In the case of
joint appointments, both department heads must submit a memo. The memo must
include information on the normal teaching load responsibilities of the
applicant; what arrangements will be made to cover the teaching assignment of
the individual while on a Research Professorship; how many other faculty in the
department will be on release during the same time; and for joint appointments,
how the $6,500 will be distributed. In the case of more than one applicant from
a department, the Department Head should prioritize the individual requests and
make this known in the memo. Individuals with a course load
of less than 2 classes per year, or where the percentage of their FTE devoted to
research is 50% or greater, should consult with the SBSRI office BEFORE
submitting a proposal. AS a general rule, faculty who already receive
substantial (50% or more) release from teaching are not eligible for the
Research Professorship. Individuals who have received a Professorship must
wait three (3) full years before applying again. Applicants who also submit a
proposal to the SBS Jr. Faculty Development competition for the same academic year should
be aware that Jr. Faculty Development awards (which provide release from committee assignments AND
teaching duties) take precedence over SBSRI Professorships. Individuals may
apply to both programs; however, those who receive a Jr. Faculty Development
award will not be
eligible for a SBSRI Professorship. AWARDING OF PROFESSORSHIPS IS CONTINGENT
UPON DEPARTMENTAL RESOURCES, BOTH FINANCIAL AND PERSONNEL. |
