Dissertation Research Grant

WHAT:

Up to $800 for dissertation research. The purpose of this funding is to offer support to advanced graduate students who require funding to conduct their dissertation research, or as seed money to prepare a grant to an outside funding agency. Proposals are developed and written by graduate students according to the program guidelines and submitted to the SBSRI Advisory Board for consideration. There will be two grant deadlines in the current academic year with up to five awards for each competition.

FUNDING SUPPORT:  Allowable expenses include research-related travel and expenses, such as subject payment. This program does not support travel to meetings to present papers, publication costs, or salary supplement to the investigator. Ownership of research equipment purchased on this grant reverts to the SBSRI at the end of the research project.

HOW:

PROPOSALS include a cover sheet; abstract; 3-page proposal narrative, including a time line for completing the project being proposed; budget justification; list of research references cited; applicant’s curriculum vitae; a recommendation letter from the chair of the applicant’s dissertation committee, and a letter from the Department Head. See Dissertation Research Grant Application Guidelines for specifics.

PAYMENTS: An expense account is established in the SBSRI Office through which ALL expenditures are handled. Awardees must contact the SBSRI Office BEFORE spending or committing awarded funds, must be available to sign any required paperwork during the funding period, and must be registered students at the University of Arizona during the entire funding period. Operational advances can be made only to individuals on the UA payroll.  Funding expires on July 31st of the academic year in which it is awarded, and no grant will carry over into the new academic year. Awardees are required to submit a 1- to 2-page research report to the SBSRI within 60 days of the end of the funding period.
